Hello again,
Today was orientation day 1. I was introduced to all of the students, as well as some of the professors. We started off the day with a walk about the area with our professor for the 'British Life and Culture' course. He is a funny older gentleman who enjoys making people feel awkward and smoking a pipe. I am pretty sure his class will be an awesome one. Anyway, we walked around and he showed us basic things like where the nearest ATM (hole in the wall, according to the British) is and the post office. He also gave us a short history of the neighborhood, including a wall that still stands near the museums that was damaged from WWII. After our walk, we went to a pub, The Hereford Arms. This is our unofficial pub, as its the closest one to the Centre. I had a lovely meal of tomato soup and fish and chips, graciously purchased by LU. We sat around for a long time, chatting with one another. Later, Alex and I walked an epic walk. We ended up all over, from Chelsea to Westminster to Brompton to Battersea Park and the River Thames. We were a *bit* lost, but we weren't the only ones. At one point we were at Belgrave Square, near the embassies, when a couple of older women stopped by us to use our map, as well as another man. Apparently all lost people end up at Belgrave Square. We ended up figuring out where we were, and headed back home, passing through a strange shouting match that was occurring between two men, while an older woman was crouched on the ground, picking up the contents of her purse. The one man was yelling obsenities, while the other was, well...also yelling obsenities, but also telling the other man to call the police. We didn't stick around to find out what the hell was going on. Anway, I forgot to take pictures today, so I will try to make up for it tomorrow!
